Module 1 Recap
In brief: This module introduced the foundational concepts of Master Data Management — what master data is, how it differs from other data types, and why managing it consistently across systems is one of the most important things an organization can do.
Module support notes
This module introduced the foundational concepts of Master Data Management — what master data is, how it differs from other data types, and why managing it consistently across systems is one of the most important things an organization can do.
What we covered
- Master data is the core business information organizations rely on across systems and processes — customers, products, suppliers, employees, and locations.
- Enterprise data falls into three categories: master data, transactional data, and reference data. Each serves a different purpose and they work together to support business operations.
- Master Data Management is the practice of creating trusted, governed, and reusable business information — combining people, processes, governance, and technology.
- Without MDM, organizations experience fragmentation, duplication, and reduced trust in data — problems that become even more costly in the age of AI.
- Strong data foundations improve operations, support better decisions, and prepare organizations for reliable AI outcomes.
The key idea
Data becomes more valuable when it is managed consistently. Master Data Management helps organizations reduce fragmentation, improve trust, and create a stronger foundation for analytics, automation, and AI.
Coming up in Module 2
Now that we understand what master data is and why it matters, the next step is understanding how organizations manage and protect it over time. In Module 2, we will explore data governance, ownership, stewardship, and the processes that help maintain trusted business information.
Before you move on
Think about one system or process in your organization where master data inconsistency has caused a problem — a report that didn't match, a customer record that was wrong, or a decision made on conflicting information. That is the problem MDM solves. Keep it in mind as you move through the rest of this course.
